FIRE AND FUN, THE RETURN TICKET
What do you like to do for FUN?
Have you ever had a friend say, “Let’s go read dictionaries for vacation, it will be so much fun.”?
Sometimes, someone else’s idea or definition of fun isn’t quite the same as ours.
When you think of launching, creating and keeping a website going, does fun come to mind?
Out of the gate, this whole blog thing was a lot of fun for me. I was connecting with people from all over the world. I was learning things faster than you can say ‘spaghetti and meatballs.’
In an attempt to run my blog like a ninja ( at what I thought would be an accelerated rate) I joined a blogger group. Right around this time, simple things like math and how to be a decent human being started to get all screwed up for me based on behaviour in said group.
The activities were supposed to be quid pro quo but never, ever added up. I was having ZERO fun. I saw lots of things I didn’t like, and one day the comment section in a forum left me with such an awful taste in my mouth (think Buckley’s Cough Syrup – blech!). I realised I should just burn the whole thing to the ground and start again.
As I always do, I sat down one night with my husband, Dave. Over a glass of wine, I just started sharing some of the things I found frustrating.
Dave straight up said, “This isn’t frustration Kellie, it’s toxic, and you need to get away for these people.
In my signature all or nothing modus operands I fled the scene of Facebook. That was all a couple of months ago.
At this same time, I started focusing on improving my photography skills.
I was looking back at what I’ve created since the new year, and one word has popped up everywhere. You guessed it. FUN!!! Yes, it is an all caps and quadruple exclamation marks kind of fun.
I love reading blogs for fun. Why shouldn’t I have a blast creating mine?
Fun, for me, means celebrating the little pleasures, embracing creativity and finding inspiration in my everyday life.
In a matter of weeks, I found a tribe over on Instagram. I love this platform. I developed a daily habit that is super comfortable and fits my style. Creating and sharing are such a joy. I even plan and script out some of my photos. My stash of props is getting used more frequently. IG it is all about the element of surprise and where the unexpected gets championed.
My followers are multiplying faster than Donald Trump’s lies.
Even photo imperfections have been a source of expansion and growth. Compared to the rules and frustration of the whole FB fiasco, my efforts on IG fit the bill.
Turns out standing alone rather than trying to come up with tactics to stick out, fits me best.
The photos I’m sharing this week are not perfect by any means, but by looking at the lighting and angles in this one shot and changing filters, I was able to learn that I get my kicks solving puzzles visually.
I hope that you enjoyed this little story and felt inspired to see what I’ve been doing over on Instagram. I make no claims, but if you’d like to join me as I run in the wrong direction, I’d love to hang out where it’s ‘hip to be square’. <<Click << and I’ll take you there.
I’ll leave you with a quote from the ever wise Rumi,
“To Give Light, One Must First Burn”
